The city of Lynchburg, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, is the setting for the exhibition entitled "A Cow and a Caterpillar with a Tricycle in Between" to be held from October 7 – 29, 2011. The return to Lynchburg after 28 years is a nostalgic one. I earned my degree in Studio Art at what was then Randolph-Macon Woman's College, now Randolph College, and had my first two solo exhibitions in this city.
The present exhibition consists of collage, sculpture and painting created in the last 5 years. Books play a major role, transformed into sculptures or elaborate collage volumes which remain identifiable as books but become illegible and acquire an alternative significance. Small mixed media sculptures assembled with wood scraps and other materials and small paintings, either shaped and mounted on wood or divided into unframed rectangles which combine to form the snapshot-inspired images, are also included. The collage series created in the last year play a prominent role, consisting of 26 pieces in all.
The exhibition will be held in the Ann White Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts, a center of creativity in Central Virginia, combining theater, dance music and fine arts in a regional cultural center.
